Exhibition Statement August 07
Earlier this year I traveled to China with a group of nine Australian potters for a residency at the Fu Le International Ceramic Art Museum in Fuping, Shaanxi Province.
We were humbled by the pottery workers’ acceptance of their lives of hard work under harsh conditions; matter-of-fact approach to their skills, processes and products; and their gentle acceptance of us and our rather precious Western ways of working and regarding our craft–art.
I have resumed my daily routine with a strengthened bond with my heritage as a potter. I feel that studio potters should not be too precious about themselves and their art. We should have great respect for both the medium and creativity of those who transform it into the beautiful and intimate objects that we contemplate and use in our daily lives.
