Artist Statement
‘Inspiration’ is a word often used to seek the source of an idea. My sources lie in my experience of the created natural world, in rocks and stones, canyons and chasms and in the creations of mankind. The process of making and firing is a reflection of the processes of nature, sometimes life giving, sometimes destructive. ‘As if through a fire tested’, I wish to explore the ability of human creation to withstand and respect the rigours of natural forces. At times refined and delicate, at times robust and bold, my work is grounded in the morphology of landscape and the archeology of humankind’s endeavor to mould its environment.
My work in ‘Slowtime’ is inspired by the ruins of great ancient metropolises destroyed by earthquake, which I visited last summer. Amongst colossal fallen columns, only the corners remain standing, a reminder of the impermanence of our existence yet affirmation of our resilience.
